The EMBL's European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) is seeking a Research Support Officer to assist the Service Team Leaders leading EMBL-EBI’s resources with overall scientific management.

The Research Support Officer role will provide an exciting opportunity to develop your skills in a wide range of areas. The nature of the role is suited to someone with an entrepreneurial spirit, who can identify how best to assist their teams and who is interested in identifying and solving complex problems.

Your role

As a Research Support Officer the main activities you will be involved in are:
  • Supporting the management of the on-going activities and reporting for existing externally funded grants from the Wellcome Trust, EU, NIH, UK Research Councils, and other funding bodies, in coordination with the EBI and EMBL grants offices.
  • Providing assistance in monitoring the budget and staffing of the teams.
  • Assistance in the organisation, planning and preparation of grant applications to relevant funding agencies.
  • Arranging and planning strategic and project-related internal meetings for the teams, with assistance from the group secretaries.
  • Supporting aspects of organising and planning relevant external events such as scientific advisory board meetings.
  • Assisting in the preparation of publications, press releases and other external communication.
  • Helping to improve research management processes, for example by writing up processes and investigating new tools where necessary.
You will be part of the Research Management Office and you will work closely with several Faculty Team Leaders, the other members of the Research Management Office, and the EBI and EMBL administration. You will support Teams within the EMBL-EBI Services that develop and maintain resources such as Ensembl, UniProt, Expression Atlas and Europe PMC. 

You have

  • An undergraduate degree in the life sciences or other subject area that is relevant to the remit of EMBL-EBI.
  • Demonstrable experience that is relevant to writing grants and reports;
  • Excellent written English language skills.
  • A high degree of ability in handling numerical or financial data, and demonstrated attention to detail.
  • Good organisational skills, the ability to prioritise different tasks and to manage your own workload.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • The ability to handle confidential information and all situations with diplomacy and tact.
  • A high level of independent working and initiative.
  • Ability and eagerness to learn new software and tools.

You might also have

  • A Ph.D. or Masters relevant to work undertaken at EMBL-EBI, or equivalent work experience in a scientific or technical environment.
  • Knowledge of, or experience with, EMBL-EBI’s resources.
  • Previous experience in a service or support role.
  • Experience in coordinating complex tasks or projects across a team or a number of partners.
  • Familiarity with modern technologies used for communicating, writing and monitoring progress.
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft office packages, including Word and Excel.
