Working hours
The basic working week is a 5-day week, with 39 working hours in average, excluding breaks. EMBL also offers part time positions and flexible working time.
Annual leave

Employed full-time members of personnel are entitled to paid annual leave of 2.5 working days per month of service, i.e. 30 working days in a full year.

Sick leave

Inform your supervisor and HR officer/outstation administrator when you cannot come to the laboratory because of sickness. If your absence is longer than three consecutive calendar days you need to provide human resources with a medical certificate.

Maternity / Paternity / Parental Leave

Female staff members are entitled to paid maternity leave which shall be not less than 16 weeks (normally 6 weeks before but not less than 12 weeks after the child's birth).

EMBL also offers 10 days of paid paternity leave as well as parental leave for up to 14 paid weeks and for further weeks without pay until the child reaches the age of one year.

In addition, various flexible work arrangements such as Keep In Touch days are available as well.

Paid special leave
Members of personnel are entitled to 1 day of special paid leave for first removal on joining EMBL, if the removal costs are paid by the Laboratory.

In addition, members of personnel are entitled to paid special leave for e.g. marriage/legal partnership, death of life companion and close relatives.
Home leave
Non-resident staff members and their families are allowed a free return to their home base every second year.
Public and school holidays
All staff members at EMBL receive the public holidays in the country of their duty station.
