Key dates

  • 2006: Partnership established with CRG’s Systems Biology Unit
  • 2017: EMBL Barcelona site is established. The EMBL-CRG partnership is expanded to encompass all CRG units and is transformed into a local partnership.

The partnership with the CRG unit for Research in Systems Biology started with the aim to address issues in the field of systems biology, and further understand key aspects of biology relevant to human health.

The EMBL-CRG partnership arose from Spain’s desire to implement the EMBL operational model in the development of a new national research institution. The partnership builds upon the synergistic commitments of the partners, combining EMBL’s expertise in computational biology with the CRG’s know-how in specific areas of genomics and proteomics.

Its research draws on the expertise of various scientific disciplines and spans systems analysis from the molecular to cellular level.

The partnership will support the newly established EMBL Barcelona site, allowing for a more extensive interaction between researchers from the CRG and EMBL. Joint activities will be carried out with different research units at CRG and researchers will look into complementarity while sharing the usage of state of the art infrastructure with the aim to facilitate the implementation of new ambitious scientific projects.

The Mycoplasma pneumonia project is the largest undertaken so far under the umbrella of the EMBL-CRG partnership, aimed at the elucidation of a comprehensive structural and temporal description of an entire cell at close to molecular resolution. The outstanding quality of the collaboration is substantiated by numerous joint publications in Science that were widely acclaimed amongst the international scientific community.

On the European level, EMBL and the CRG are working together in the framework of the Euro-BioImaging project.
