One of the cornerstones of EMBL's mission is to provide advanced training at all levels. As such career development is an important aspect of the postdoctoral experience at EMBL and multiple resources are available to support postdocs during their time at EMBL and to help prepare them for the next step in their careers. 

Postdoctoral Office

The EMBL Postdoctoral Programme is actively involved in organising networking and training events for postdocs and early stage researchers. Besides the Postdoctoral Retreat and social get togethers, the Programme caters for the annual EMBL Career Day and various workshops (e.g. Preparing for the Academic Job Market).


Second Mentorship Programme

Second Mentorship Programme

The aims of the Second Mentorship programme are:

  •  to enhance interactions between postdoctoral fellows and EMBL faculty
  •  to provide postdoctoral fellows with additional advice on the design and implementation of their research projects
  • to evaluate progress
  • to assist with career and personal development

New postdocs are encouraged to select a second mentor within their first three months at EMBL and to communicate their choice to the Postdoctoral Office.

Continous Scientific Training

EMBL Seminar Series

EMBL runs a very active seminar programme involving internal participation at all levels from early stage researchers to faculty. 

EMBL also has the pleasure and honour of hosting top level scientists from around the world who come and share their research with us.  Postdocs are actively involved in deciding on the annual speaker list and in hosting the visits.

EMBL Courses and Conferences

The EMBL Advanced Training Center (ATC) located at EMBL Heidelberg hosts a large number of high quality international courses and conferences.

The EMBL Course and Conference Office makes available day passes free of charge to EMBL staff to attend many of these events.
